The Contemporary Directions Ensemble is a vibrant and diverse group dedicated to performing standard and cutting-edge repertoire from the 20th and 21st Centuries. The mission of the ensemble is to give University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance students the opportunity to present relevant, significant, and meaningful new music, whether established repertoire or world premieres, from solo works to large chamber ensembles in multidisciplinary performances which may include visual elements, amplification, and electronics.

CDE has recently collaborated with composers including Julia Wolfe, Ted Hearne, Caroline Shaw, John Luther Adams, David T. Little, Augusta Read Thomas, and Evan Chambers. It has served as the ensemble for the Midwest Composers Symposium, performed with soprano Tony Arnold and the International Contemporary Ensemble as part of the Resonant Bodies Festival in Chicago in April 2018 and in September of the same year was featured on the New Music Detroit marathon Strange Beautiful Music.
