Michigan Youth Trombone Ensemble

TThe Michigan Youth Trombone Ensemble (MYTE), under the direction of Professor David Jackson, provides students advanced experience in performing a variety of trombone ensemble repertoire. Students will work with current U-M graduate and undergraduate trombone students of Prof. David Jackson to strengthen their overall musicianship, learn new repertoire, and participate in collaborative music making through weekly rehearsals.

The Michigan Youth Trombone Ensemble is open to high-school aged trombonists, and is recommended for students who are generally in upper high school grades with two to four years of musical experience.

Rehearsal Time: Sundays, 7:00 – 8:30 PM

Professor of Music

David Jackson, professor of trombone at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, enjoys an active career as a performer and teacher. He is a recognized and ardent supporter of new music who has commissioned and premiered numerous compositions for the trombone including Angel of Dreamers, by Eric Ewazen, for trombone, baritone voice and strings, and John Henry’s Big by Adolphus Hailstork for trombone and piano.

In demand as a guest clinician and performer, Jackson has presented numerous guest recitals and master classes at institutions including the Juilliard School, Yale University, UCLA, University of Minnesota, the Cincinnati College-Conservatory as well as the conservatories of Shanghai and Beijing. His former students occupy performing and teaching positions around the world.

Jackson has been on the faculties of Baylor University, Eastern Michigan University, the University of Toledo, the Interlochen Arts Camp, and the Idyllwild ChamberFest. He spends his summers teaching and performing at the Brevard Music Center. Mr. Jackson is an S. E. Shires artist and clinician.

Those interested in participating in the 2022-2023 Michigan Youth Trombone Ensemble Season should complete an application by following the directions posted in the following section.

NOTE: The Michigan Youth Trombone Ensemble does not require an audition to participate.

ELIGIBILITY
Students interested in the Michigan Youth Trombone Ensemble must be enrolled in grades 9 through 12 for the 2022-2023 academic year.

2022-2023 Tuition
MYTE Participant – $315.00
Non-refundable application fee – $50

A discounted tuition rate of $315.00 per additional ensemble is available for musicians who participate in multiple ensembles. This discount is applied to the ensemble of equal or lesser value.

NEED-BASED SCHOLARSHIP
A limited number of need-based scholarships are available to families with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $100,000 or under in the previous calendar year, or with special circumstances due to the pandemic. To be considered you must upload your financial aid materials by the application deadline as part of your application. This includes:

  • Monthly Expenses
  • Previous Year’s Tax Return
  • Statement of Need

REFUND POLICY
Full refunds of MYE tuition are only available before the first rehearsal (September 11, 2022). SMTD Engagement and Outreach refund policy
