Bach Partitas Re-Imagined

Join us for a performance by Joseph Gascho, harpsichord with Christine Harada Li, violin, and Nathaniel Pierce, cello. As the culmination of a year-long study and transcription of solo violin works, this recital will feature J.S. Bach’s Partitas in B Minor and E Major for solo violin, performed on Baroque instruments in arrangements for violin and basso continuo. The musicians will also discuss the musical processes of transcription, the artistic processes of group composition, and the values of de- and re-constructive engagement with musical scores and highly-renowned cultural artifacts.

Halfway There: Health, Home & Hope in Art Song is a concert program featuring two new song cycles by Mikeila McQueston, pre-candidate for the DMA in Composition, with performances by Loren Reash-Henz, baritone; John Morefield, piano; and guest artist Jenna Grissom, soprano. This performance is made possible by a grant from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance Wellness Program, the EXCEL Lab, and U-M’s Eisenberg Family Depression Center.

This recital will take place on modern piano and cello. It is sponsored by the U-M Library, Arts at Michigan, and the Stearns Collection. It also features pianists Gabriel Merrill-Steskal and Yumiao Mai.

Celebrating the Stearns Collection of Musical Instruments: An International and Intertemporal Musicscape

The Stearns Collection presents an exciting multigenre concert highlighting dozens of unique instruments, as part of the William P. Malm Performance Series. The program features U-M student and faculty performers, including a Gamelan Ensemble, a Chinese Orchestra, European Renaissance and Baroque instruments, and analog synthesizers. A recently donated orpharion and automatic banjo will be heard, as well as premiere performances of the xylopong table, the electromagnetic harpsichord, and the collection’s newly restored vintage Moog synthesizer.
