An ensemble of six players on strings, winds, percussion, and piano perform on stage, led by a conductor

Conductor Jayce Ogren

The University of Michigan Contemporary Directions Ensemble presents a tribute to composer György Ligeti, marking the 100th anniversary of his birth. The program includes his iconic Chamber Concerto, as well the rarely heard Hamburg Concerto, featuring SMTD faculty member Adam Unsworth on French horn. Also featured are Unsuk Chin’s Advice from a Caterpillar, Stravinsky’s ebullient Dumbarton Oaks, and Colmena by Michigan alumna Arlene Sierra, who will be in attendance as a guest composer.

The Contemporary Directions Ensemble (CDE), composed exclusively of graduate music students, performs contemporary classical music in a variety of instrumentations, from solo works to chamber orchestra. The CDE frequently commissions and performs new works and hosts renowned guest artists and composer residencies.

The CDE artistic advisor is SMTD composition professor Roshanne Etezady.
