Department of Performing Arts Technology

The Department of Performing Arts Technology integrates the study of music, engineering, and allied arts in a close-knit, collaborative environment. The inspiring and accomplished faculty are internationally renowned scholars, teachers, artists and practitioners. A recent $29.5 million facilities renovation has created state-of-the-art studios for mastering a spectrum of technological skills. As part of a top-ranked public university, where excellence is the guiding principle, students have the unparalleled ability to collaborate with their highly-talented peers across campus—from working with musicians, dancers, and performing artists of every genre in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance (SMTD) to developing next-generation audio technologies at Michigan’s distinguished College of Engineering

Alumni Notes

Christopher Rozell (BFA ’00, performing arts technology), who also graduated with a BSE in computer engineering, was named the inaugural executive director of Georgia Tech’s new Institute for Neuroscience, Neurotechnology, and Society. Rozell proudly brings his SMTD background into the role, including previous efforts using the arts in research and public engagement around emerging technologies. (Spring 2026)
Transgenre songwriter Josephinex Ashley Hansis (BFA ’06, performing arts technology) composed music and lyrics for A Year without Summer, the latest production by award-winning Viennese performance artist Florentina Holzinger. This past winter, Hansis ended their long-running pop project Godmother with the band's final concert along with the release of two retrospective compilation albums. (Fall 2025)
Eric Robsky Huntley (BFA ’10, performing arts technology) serves as a lecturer in urban science and planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. They also direct the MIT Spatial Analysis & Action Research Group and are the founder of OGRAPHIES Research & Design, a mission-driven spatial data science consultancy. (1/2025)
