“Contrasts and Concertos” – In this exciting USO concert, the spotlight is on pianist Aleks Shameti, winner of the 2024 SMTD Concerto Competition, and the musicians of the USO, in two virtuoso Hungarian showpieces by Liszt and Bartók. In the evening’s opening piece, Enescu’s Prelude in Unison, the orchestra’s string sections seem to tell a story of personal struggle, aspiration, triumph, and serenity. Kenneth Kiesler, conductor.

Muse Ye, DMA candidate in collaborative piano, will present a dissertation lecture recital on New Zealand composer Jenny McLeod. McLeod retained her curiosity through her compositional career, from producing works using post-tonal techniques from her studies with Messiaen, to full length opera based on the Māori legend of creation, and works inspired by contemporary popular music (rock, jazz etc.). Short clips of large ensemble works will be projected, and two works by McLeod will be performed live.
