In collaboration with the Ann Arbor Symphony, the Piano Department is proud to present pianist Yekwon Sunwoo as a guest master teacher to several Piano Department students. In 2017, Mr. Sunwoo was the first Korean pianist to take the gold medal in the Van Cliburn international Piano Competition, and he has since established a world-wide career as a soloist. This event is free and open to the public, supported in part by the Sally Fleming Master Class Fund.

“Chamber Symphonies” – In the Contemporary Directions Ensemble’s first concert of the season, John Adams’ frenetic Son of Chamber Symphony is paired with a piece that inspired its composition: the even more frenetic Hindemith Kammermuski #1. The program also includes the premiere of Cole Reyes’ Brehm Prize-winning composition burnt sienna, and Joan Tower’s whimsical Petroushskates. Jayce Ogren, conductor.

Part of the U-M Alice Coltrane Residency celebrating the life and work of trailblazing musician, composer, and spiritual leader Alice Coltrane. In this program, vocalist Michelle Coltrane and harpist Brandee Younger come together for part conversation, part performance, featuring oral histories and biographical stories of Alice Coltrane interwoven with performances and demonstrations.
