The School of Music, Theatre & Dance is a highly selective professional school encompassing programs in music, dance, theatre, and musical theatre on a beautiful campus set in the culturally rich, quintessential college town of Ann Arbor.
We have one of America’s most sustainable communities, with art and culture everywhere — theatre, music, literature, lectures, and Big Ten intercollegiate athletics.
We look forward to talking with you about the range of our programs, our outstanding faculty, and the vast resources and opportunities available through the greater University of Michigan community.

Visit Us On-campus or Online!
Visiting the School of Music, Theatre & Dance in-person or virtually is the best way to learn about our programs, see our talented students and faculty in action, and explore our vibrant and beautiful campus!
SMTD is currently offering two modes to connect with us: on-campus tours and online webinars.
While these programs are primarily geared towards prospective undergraduate students, prospective graduate students are welcome to attend. If you are interested in a graduate program, you can also email firstname.lastname@example.org for information on setting up an appointment with an admissions counselor.
On-Campus Tour & Information Session
Please read through this section before proceeding to the tour registration link further down the page. Your understanding and assistance in keeping our community safe and healthy is greatly appreciated, and we look forward to expanding campus tour access as soon as possible.
Join us for a 120-minute walking tour of the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, led by one of our SMTD student tour guides! Please note that parts of the tour will take place outside, so we strongly encourage you to check the local weather forecast and dress accordingly.
We are currently offering guided tours on select weekday mornings and afternoons. When new tour sessions become available, the registration page will be updated to accurately reflect tour availability. If you do not currently see a tour session on the calendar, we are in the process of finalizing our upcoming tour dates and will update the calendar as soon as we can. Thank you for your patience.
Be aware that sessions may not be available on audition days, major holidays, during SMTD orientation sessions, or during the university winter break.
If you’ve already made travel plans and a tour isn’t offered on the day of your visit, we’d encourage you to go on a self-guided tour of our campus and facilities! A self-guided tour still allows you to walk around inside buildings and get a feel for life at SMTD. Please stop by the Office of Admissions, in room 2290 of the E.V. Moore Building at 1100 Baits Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48109, or contact us at email@example.com or 734-764-0593 to request your self-guided tour materials.
Tour dates are available to prospective students interested in any and all SMTD programs. Tours are led by a current SMTD student and include a tour of SMTD’s main facilities on U-M’s North Campus: the E.V. Moore Building, Walgreen Drama Center, and Dance Building. Visitors will also receive a link to a recorded information session from SMTD Admissions staff, providing an overview of SMTD, as well as the application and auditions process.
Prospective graduate students are welcome to attend our on-campus tours, but the content is primarily focused on undergraduates. If you are interested in a graduate program, you can also email firstname.lastname@example.org for information on setting up an appointment with an admissions counselor.
- All in-person tours are by appointment only. Due to strict tour capacities, registration is required and walk-ins cannot be accommodated. Walk-in visitors will instead be provided with a packet of information for a self-guided tour.
- Your party cannot exceed three total people from the same household.
- In the event of cancellations or if additional dates become available, the registration page will be updated to accurately reflect tour availability.
- Tour guests are encouraged to complete a ResponsiBLUE health screening prior to the start of your tour.
- Although masking is now optional, mask use is still suggested as an effective strategy for enhanced personal protection, especially for those with immunocompromised status, those who are not vaccinated or up to date on their COVID-19 vaccinations, and anyone with a perceived increased situational risk.

Online Webinars and Virtual Tours
When are Webinars Offered?
Webinars are currently offered monthly on Tuesday afternoons. However, check the available sessions & times since they can vary depending on the time of year and may not be available on audition days, major holidays, during SMTD orientation sessions, or during the university winter break.
Our webinars include an information session led by an SMTD Admissions staff member. This session will cover the programs offered by SMTD, the application and audition/interview process, student life, and answer any other questions you may have. Sessions generally last 45 minutes to one hour and are scheduled approximately one month in advance (e.g. January webinars are added to the calendar in December).
Prospective graduate students are welcome to attend, but the content is primarily focused on undergraduates. If you are interested in a graduate program you can also email email@example.com for information on setting up an appointment with an admissions counselor.
The SMTD YouTube page currently hosts a virtual tour that will walk you through some of our spaces in the Earl V. Moore Building and the Walgreen Drama Center. Additionally, the U-M Office of Undergraduate Admissions offers a virtual tour of the U-M campus.
Additional Virtual Resources
The U-M Office of Undergraduate Admissions has a Virtual Resources page, which includes virtual tours, virtual info sessions, YouTube videos, student answers to FAQs, and student vlogs. Although not SMTD-specific, they can be a great way to familiarize yourself with U-M as a whole.
Faculty Meetings, Sample Lessons & Studio Class Visits
Our extraordinary faculty includes performers active on the international stage; highly experienced former members of symphony orchestras, opera houses, and dance and theatre companies; prize-winning composers; and renowned scholars in theory and musicology.
Many faculty members welcome the opportunity to visit with prospective students and many are available for private lessons. Please contact our faculty members directly, as they schedule their own appointments and have unique policies for visits, lesson fees, etc.
Unfortunately, due to the high volume of requests, the Musical Theatre faculty are not able to meet with prospective students. Please contact SMTD Admissions to inquire further about the program.
Questions, Changes, Cancellations
If you have questions about the scheduling process or if you need to change or cancel your appointment, please contact the SMTD Admissions Office at 734.764.0593 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
