The Department of Dance at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance presents Touch a Breath – The Body Tells, an MFA Thesis performance choreographed by Gloria Ahlijah (Sitso). In a world that often obscures vulnerability with an illusion of fearlessness, this project seeks to challenge stereotypes and redefine strength and weakness through the transformative power of dance.
Performances will be 8:00 p.m. March 22 and 23. Tickets are free, available at the door starting 30 minutes before show time.
Touch a Breath – The Body Tells is a creative work that delves into the concept of portraying human vulnerabilities as strength, aiming to counter the narrative that falsely argues that females as more susceptible and fragile. The body has been influenced by a lot of circumstances; it is time to consider these difficult times as an opportunity for growth.
Drawing on the research of a Vietnamese philosopher Thich Nhat Hahn, the project seeks to bring participants into valuing the present moment, fostering healing, transformation, and a hope for positivity amidst difficult times. Touch a Breath – The Body Tells has a lasting impact on the mental well-being of participants, fostering a deeper understanding of self and spirituality through bodies in time and space.
