This promotional poster for a musical performance titled "Sounding Korea Outside the Box" features the ensemble Sangjaru in a vibrant, abstract setting. At the top, three performers stand wearing oversized, cloud-like white headgear; the central figure wears orange-tinted sunglasses and holds a musical bow, while the others wear casual attire and hold percussion mallets. To the right, a smaller circular portrait shows collaborator Michael Gould in a black cap and jacket. The center of the poster is dominated by the group's name, SANGJARU, in massive black block lettering, followed by event details for February 11, 2026, from 7:00 PM to 8:20 PM at the Keene Theater in Ann Arbor. The design is framed by the Korean Performing Arts Initiative logo at the top and several University of Michigan institutional logos at the bottom, noting that the event is free and open to the public.

Step into the vibrant world of Korean music with Sangjaru, a captivating folk fusion band that merges the spirit of traditional minyo with the infectious rhythms of gypsy swing, funk, rock, and improvisation. Named after the Korean words sangja (box) and jaru (sack), Sangjaru blends the stability of tradition with the adaptability of innovation, creating a deterritorialized flow of dazzling new cultural expressions. Winner of the 2019 Sori Frontier competition at the Jeonju International Sori Festival, Sangjaru is recognized as one of Korea’s most exciting and inventive emerging bands.

This special event features a collaborative performance with Professor Michael Gould of the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre & Dance and the Residential College. Dr. Gould is internationally acclaimed for his work in contemporary percussion and drumset performance, and his collaborations span music, dance, visual art, and science. His adventurous, cross-disciplinary approach makes him the perfect partner for Sangjaru’s innovative musical explorations.

Band Members:
Cho Sungyoon: Guitar
Kwon Hyochang: Janggu (hourglass drum) & Kkwaenggwari (small gong)
Nam Seonghun: Ajaeng (bowed zither)
