Experience the how’s and why’s of including a systematic approach to music listening in preK-elementary music classes. Participate in demonstrations of successful child-tested activities and research-based strategies, and consider guidelines designed to help develop perceptive music listening skills. Listening examples provided will include less-common pieces to expand upon the more traditional/standard elementary listening repertoire. Jazz will be the focus of the afternoon session. There are many age-appropriate ways for jazz music to be introduced and infused into the general music curriculum. Participants will be introduced to materials and activities incorporating songs, recordings and jazz-related children’s books.
Guest presenter WENDY SIMS is the Curators’ Distinguished Teaching Professor and Director of Music Education at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO.
