The U-M Gamelan Ensemble, directed by performer Gavin Ryan, will host soloists from the National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan for a second instrument demonstration. NCO musicians will discuss new and experimental methods for playing on traditional Chinese instruments, as well as how instrument technology has developed in recent history. In addition, they will preview their Wednesday Gala Performance by discussing modern adaptations of Taiwanese folk music. This demonstration is open to the public and well-suited for university students and community members.

The National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan (NCO) is a national level orchestra formed by elite professionals from the world of traditional Chinese music. It aims to explore traditions of the region as well as to embrace music of the contemporary era. The orchestra strengthens the foundation of Taiwan’s traditional music through composition, conveys Taiwan’s aesthetic and artistic taste through performance, and aims to promote the music of Taiwan on the international stage.
