Each May, EXCEL takes 25 students to New York City! We’ll spend the weekend going behind-the-scenes of Broadway and some of the city’s leading performing arts organizations.
Current SMTD students, including those who will graduate in April, are eligible to apply. Please note that any SMTD student who has serious interest in either track is encouraged to apply, regardless of major. Applicants must submit a letter of intent, resume, and faculty recommendation communicating a strong fit for their chosen track and how it resonates with their professional goals.
In order to maximize inclusiveness, the only costs to students selected for this trip will be A) $75 deposit to confirm their spot (payable after being selected) plus B) costs of their meals while traveling. All other expenses will be covered by the Meta Weiser EXCEL Fund, which is made possible by a generous gift from U-M Regent Ronald and Eileen Weiser.
Applications open on January 31, 2020, and close on February 21, 2020.
Apply for one of two “tracks” below!
Instrumental Music Performance students will receive mentorship from Broadway pit musicians, get coachings on Broadway excerpts, and sit in the pit of a Broadway performance! Students will be expected to perform and be coached on excerpts, provided in advance of the trip.
Arts Management students will visit National Sawdust in Brooklyn, and have small group site visits at organizations including the New York Philharmonic, Martha Graham Dance, and Carnegie Hall. Students will also see a Broadway show!
