Our Impact
Educational Impact
- SMTD offers more than 40 undergraduate and 25 graduate degree programs across 17 departments that span the full spectrum of the performing arts.
- In addition to training and educating the school’s 1,200 students, students from units across U-M explore the performing arts through 125 campus-wide courses and ensembles.
- Every semester, more than 2,000 non-major students enroll in SMTD classes, with roughly 800 students performing in non-major ensembles.
Campus & Community Engagement
- In the 2023/24 academic year, SMTD welcomed audiences to over 1,000 events.
- Approximately 30,000 people attended our ticketed performances, with thousands more attending free concerts, productions, recitals, lectures, and master classes.
- More than 150 million people watched the Michigan Marching Band and Athletic Bands perform in 2023/24, when combining in-person and TV audiences.
- Currently, over 400 U-M alumni teach music across the state of Michigan, fostering a love of music in thousands of children every year.
Performing Arts Leadership
- Our faculty and alumni have won Emmys, Grammys, Oscars, and Tonys, and have been selected as MacArthur Fellows and awarded Pulitzer Prizes and the National Medal of the Arts.
- They are editors and publishers of prestigious scholarly journals and have taught and pursued their research at esteemed universities around the world.
- Our faculty and alumni are arts administrators and community leaders, advocating for a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable approach to the arts.
