Bio

Kelly Hoppenjans (she/her) is a doctoral student in musicology at University of Michigan. Her research areas include contemporary US popular music, voice, digital studies, and media studies, and her dissertation centers on transformative voice technology in 21st century US pop music. Kelly earned her master’s in commercial voice performance from Belmont University in 2015 and her bachelor’s in musical theatre from Northwestern University in 2011. She taught private voice, commercial voice ensembles, vocal seminar, and commercial vocal styles classes at Belmont and Volunteer State Community College before leaving to pursue her doctorate in 2021. Kelly is also an independent musician, singer-songwriter, and music producer; she has released three EPs and one full-length album, which was featured in publications like NPR’s All Songs Considered, American Songwriter, and The Alternative as well as played on radio stations like Nashville’s Lightning 100 and Austin’s KUTX.
