Bio
David Ammer joined the faculty of the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance in Fall 2026 as its Brass Chamber Music Coordinator, and currently also holds principal trumpet positions with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Opera Orchestra, and Sunflower Music Festival. David is a frequent guest performer with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, as well as a founding member of the Motor City Brass Quintet, whose 2009 CD Christmas Vespers received critical acclaim for its premiere recording of John Harbison’s complete title work. David’s recent solo performances include Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 by J.S. Bach (2026), Concerto for Trumpet by F.J. Haydn (2025), and Concerto for Trumpet by J.N. Hummel (2019) at Sunflower Music Festival, as well as the Concerto for Trumpet and Five Players by Ellen Taffe-Zwilich and Prayer for St. Gregory by Alan Hovhaness with Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings (2016). A graduate of Swarthmore College and Yale University School of Music, David’s 2011 solo CD, La Trompette a Renouvelé!, features premiere recordings of 20th century recital works. Originally from Lexington, Massachusetts, David performed with the Boston Lyric Opera Orchestra and served on the music faculty of the University of Massachusetts at Boston before moving to Michigan with his spouse, who is a professor at University of Michigan Marsal Family School of Education.
