The University of Michigan Women of Color in the Academy Project (WOCAP) will present its annual Shirley Verrett Award on March 25, 2025 at the University of Michigan Museum of Art honoring Professor Christi-Anne Castro.
Please join us for an evening of celebration beginning at 5:30 pm with a reception to follow. The event is free and open to the public, however, registration is requested.
This year, we are honoring Professor Christi-Anne Castro, Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Associate Professor of Musicology in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance.
The Shirley Verrett Award recognizes faculty who support the success of students in the arts from diverse backgrounds. Dr. Castro’s dedication to mentorship, scholarship, and advocacy exemplifies this legacy, and we are thrilled to honor her contributions. This free, public event will feature a performance by her students and collaborators, celebrating her impact on musicology and the U-M community. Light refreshments will be served.
The Shirley Verrett Award was created in 2011 by the Office of the Senior Vice Provost in honor of the late Shirley Verrett, a U-M professor who “would have walked the world over for her students,” organizers say. It is administered by WOCAP and is supported by SMTD, UMMA, and ODEI.
