Welcome to Jessica Getman — Managing Editor

Getman - Headshot -Outside-WEBThe U-M Gershwin Initiative is pleased to announce the arrival of Dr. Jessica Getman as the inaugural Managing Editor of the George and Ira Gershwin Critical Edition. With Dr. Getman in the office we will increase production efforts to bring the first volumes of the project to press, namely Rhapsody in Blue (1924, jazz band version, edited by Ryan Bañagale) and the landmark opera Porgy and Bess (1935, edited by Wayne Shirley).

Dr. Getman recently earned her Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Michigan, writing a dissertation on music in the original series of Star Trek (1966–69). Before joining the staff of the U-M Gershwin Critical Edition, she worked as an editorial assistant for Music of the United States of America, a scholarly series of music editions published for the American Musicological Society by A-R Editions. An active performer on the oboe, Dr. Getman received a bachelor’s degree in performance from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. She holds two masters degrees from Boston University, one in Historical Performance on baroque oboe, and a second in Musicology, for which she wrote a thesis on eighteenth-century French vaudeville. Her scholarly interests include critical editing, film and television music, popular music in science fiction media, and amateur music making in fandom. Her research will be published by the Journal of the Society for American Music in 2015 and the Journal of Fandom Studies in 2016.
