Sean Gao (BM ’96, MM ’97, violin) composed Shanghai Sonatas, a new musical based on trues stories of Jewish refugee musicians bringing Western classical music to Chinese children escaping the Nazis. In March 2023, the concert version world premiered at the Wallis Center for the Performing Arts.
