Christine Goerke has built an international career distinguished by artistic excellence, leadership, mentorship, and an enduring commitment to the future of the art form. Now serving on the voice faculty at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, she is recognized as one of the defining dramatic sopranos of her generation. A two-time GRAMMY Award winner, recipient of the Opera News Award and Musical America’s Vocalist of the Year honor, she has also received an Honorary Doctor of Music from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. In recognition of her contributions to music and the arts, she was named a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture, one of France’s highest cultural distinctions.
Over more than three decades, Goerke has built a remarkable artistic legacy at the Metropolitan Opera. After training in the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, she underwent a remarkable artistic and vocal evolution, progressing from lyric repertoire – including Handel and Mozart – to become one of the world’s leading dramatic sopranos, acclaimed for her portrayals of Brünnhilde in Wagner’s Ring cycle, Elektra, Turandot, and other towering roles of the dramatic repertoire. Her repertoire has spanned Handel and Mozart through Berg, Britten, Wagner, Strauss, Puccini, and the music of many of today’s leading composers, reflecting an artistic versatility achieved by few singers. Her performances have reached audiences worldwide through the Metropolitan Opera’s Live in HD series.
Her international operatic career has taken her to the world’s foremost companies, including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Teatro alla Scala, Vienna State Opera, the Bayreuth Festival, Opéra National de Paris, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Teatro Real Madrid, and many others.
Her concert career has been equally distinguished, with highlights including her celebrated performance of Elektra with Andris Nelsons and the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall; appearances with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra under Nelsons; Wozzeck with Alan Gilbert at Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie; performances at the BBC Proms and the Edinburgh International Festival; and appearances at Japan’s Saito Kinen Festival. She has collaborated with leading conductors including Andris Nelsons, Seiji Ozawa, James Conlon, Semyon Bychkov, Christian Thielemann, Michael Tilson Thomas, Alan Gilbert, Zubin Mehta, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Sir Andrew Davis, Donald Runnicles, Robert Spano, Stéphane Denève, Jonathan Heyward, Kurt Masur, and James Levine.
A graduate of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Goerke was a member of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program before joining the roster of the New York City Opera and launching an international career. Her early achievements were recognized with honors including the Richard Tucker Award and the George London Award.
Alongside her celebrated interpretations of the standard repertoire, Goerke has become a committed advocate for contemporary music and the creation of new work. She continues to collaborate with leading composers including Missy Mazzoli, Christopher Tin, and Matthew Aucoin, and has appeared in numerous world premieres that continue to expand the operatic and symphonic repertoire.
Beyond the stage, Goerke has become one of opera’s most respected artistic leaders and mentors. As former Associate Artistic Director of Detroit Opera, she helped shape casting, resident artist development, strategic initiatives, and institutional planning. She is the Founder and Artistic Director of VOX Detroit, Vice President of the Board of Audition Air, and serves on the Boards of Boston Lyric Opera and the William E. Schmidt Foundation, supporting the work of Schmidt Vocal Arts.
Drawing upon more than three decades of experience at every level of the profession – as an internationally celebrated performer, collaborator, artistic leader, consultant, and mentor – Goerke brings to her students a perspective shaped by the world’s great opera houses, concert stages, and arts organizations. She is committed to preparing the next generation of artists to build meaningful, enduring, and courageous careers while remaining deeply connected to the humanity at the heart of music-making.
