Michigan Youth Treble Singers

The Michigan Youth Treble Singers (MYTS) is a select treble choir composed of outstanding middle school vocalists from across the region. Students interact with U-M SMTD faculty and students to perform repertoire from a wide variety of styles and time periods. Michigan Youth Treble Singers is open to middle-school aged singers with unchanged voices.

Time: Sundays, 1:00-2:30 pm

All rehearsals / events will take place at this regular time and location unless otherwise noted.

Julie Skadsem

Associate Professor of Music

Julie Skadsem is associate professor of choral music education and conducting at the University of Michigan where she conducts the Women’s Glee Club and teaches courses in conducting, choral techniques, and vocal methods.

Before coming to Michigan in fall 2006, Skadsem was associate professor of music education at the University of Alabama, where she taught courses in choir, conducting, and music education, and was the founding director of the Birmingham Children’s Choir. She taught vocal music (7-12) in Ironwood, Michigan and is an active clinician, adjudicator, and guest conductor. She is a member of the VoiceCare Network and is certified in Dalcroze eurhythmics, Orff-Schulwerk, and Kodaly.

In addition to her choral work, Skadsem is also an active researcher. Her research on choral conducting and rehearsal techniques has been presented at MENC, ACDA, and the Southeastern Music Education Symposium, and is being published at the state, regional, and national levels. She currently serves on the editorial board of the Southern Music Education Journal.

Michigan Youth Treble Singers Audition Requirements

Students must submit a Michigan Youth Ensembles application and pay a non-refundable $30 application fee before their audition date. Fee waivers are available for those who qualify based on financial need (please view financial aid information below). Be sure to select your audition time after you submit your MYE application. Auditions are held IN-PERSON in the Earl V. Moore Music Building. Specific audition requirements include:

  • Vocalize
  • Sightread or Tonal Memory Check
  • Sing a familiar song (ie, Happy Birthday, Star Spangled Banner, or any folk song)

Eligibility

Students interested in the Michigan Youth Treble Singers must be enrolled in grades 6 (six) through 8 (eight) for the 2026-2027 academic year. Michigan Youth Treble Singers accepts singers of ALL voice parts.

Refund Policy

Application Fee Waiver

Qualified students/families will reach out to the Acceptd Support team to request a waiver code to waive the $30 application fee. Fill out this fee waiver form to request a code.

Need-based Scholarship

A limited number of need-informed scholarships are available to families with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $125,000 or under in the previous calendar year, or with special circumstances. To be considered you must upload your financial aid materials by the application deadline as part of your application. This includes:

  • Monthly Expenses
  • Previous Year’s Tax Return
  • Statement of Need

The William E. Root Engagement & Outreach Fund supports SMTD’s Engagement & Outreach Programs, with a preference for scholarships for participants in the Michigan Youth Ensembles. This fund allows us to fully support multiple students each MYE season.
