Bio
Matthew Dear is the Admissions Program Coordinator for the School of Music, Theatre & Dance at the University of Michigan. A graduate of the University of Michigan with a Bachelor’s degree in Cultural Anthropology, Matthew’s journey in the arts began during his undergraduate years when he helped form and release music on Ghostly International, which has since grown into a globally recognized independent label.
After graduating, Matthew went on to release seven albums, tour the world multiple times, and develop unique collaborative musical experiences with companies such as Microsoft, Ford, and General Electric. His career has spanned roles as a producer, performer, educator, and industry collaborator, allowing him to explore the intersection of music, technology, and creative entrepreneurship.
In addition to his work as an artist, Matthew has served as a lecturer for the University of Michigan’s EXCEL program, where he taught The Recording Industry: Selling Your Music to the World, guiding students through the complexities of the modern music business. Now, as an Admissions Program Coordinator, he brings decades of experience as an independent musician to the admissions office, where he is passionate about helping students take the first steps toward their own careers in music.
