Bio

AJ Banta (they/he) is a historical musicology PhD pre-candidate investigating gender, sexuality, and race in American musical theatre of the early-to-mid-twentieth century. Additionally, Banta works as an editorial assistant for the Gershwin Initiative, collaborating on the production of critical editions of the Gershwins’ musicals, and serves as the social chair for the Society for Music Research at the University of Michigan. They hold a BA in music and theatre from Muhlenberg College, with respective concentrations in vocal performance and performance studies. Outside of the academic sphere, he enjoys playing with his dog Lenny, singing in choral ensembles, and getting lost in a good novel.
