The publisher overview of the book states that Murphy’s work:

  • Provides a theory of flexible meter that can account for a variety of performance timings in a single system

  • Investigates the relationship between flexible meter and self-expression in singer-songwriter music
  • Analyzes music by well-known singer-songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan alongside lesser-studied singer-songwriters like Buffy Sainte-Marie

Nancy Murphy’s Times A-Changin’: Flexible Meter as Self-Expression in Singer-Songwriter Music is now available in hardcover, in Oxford Scholarship Online, and as an ebook.
