Support the U-M Gershwin Initiative
“I am so thrilled that the works of George and Ira Gershwin are going to receive the scholarly attention they so richly deserve. The Gershwin songbook has maintained its popularity throughout the last century and shows no signs of stopping. It is very much America’s music and we look forward to securing its future legacy through this important research.”

The U-M George and Ira Gershwin Critical Edition, a 20+ year research, learning, and publishing project, requires a substantial endowment fund to guarantee that this exceptional work will be completed expeditiously and to the highest standards of excellence required. This operating endowment will create a firm foundation of support for the Edition, while enabling the transformative potential of the project’s educational efforts for students on campus and indeed for audiences across the globe. An expendable start-up fund will launch the project’s initial efforts, helping to bring such masterworks as “Porgy and Bess” and “Rhapsody in Blue” to publication.
In building this endowment there are several named gift opportunities to directly support the faculty, staff, and students who will bring this long-term project to fruition. These include support for visiting scholars, graduate students, and executive and volume editors. Donors can also sponsor individual volumes and specific works within the series.
We invite you to become a part of this groundbreaking project either by making an expendable gift to the Gershwin Initiative or by contacting Paul Harkins to learn more about contributing to the project’s endowment and how your name can be associated with George and Ira Gershwin Edition in perpetuity.
