“I am so thrilled that the works of George and Ira Gershwin are going to receive the scholarly attention they so richly deserve. The Gershwin songbook has maintained its popularity throughout the last century and shows no signs of stopping. It is very much America’s music and we look forward to securing its future legacy through this important research.”

Advisory Board Member, George and Ira Gershwin Critical Edition

The University of Michigan’s Gershwin Initiative is an ongoing, multi-decade scholarly examination of George and Ira Gershwins’ music and their extraordinary cultural legacy.

Through an exclusive arrangement with the Gershwin estates, University of Michigan scholars and students are offered a transformative opportunity to collaborate with researchers from across the globe to create the first complete scholarly edition of the Gershwins’ music—The George and Ira Gershwin Critical Edition.

This unprecedented work will provide conductors, musicians, performers, scholars, and audiences greater insight into George and Ira’s creativity, and in many cases is creating the only published performance material to accurately reflect the brothers’ vision.

The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance’s Gershwin Initiative is made possible through continued donor support and a National Endowment for the Humanities matching grant. We invite you to become a part of this groundbreaking project!
