Bio

Clay Conley (they/them) is a 3rd year Ethnomusicology PhD candidate. They hold a BA in Music and Gender and Sexuality Studies from Swarthmore College. Their current research focuses on theories of materiality, marginality, technology, and labor in contemporary western popular music and live performance. Their secondary field of interest is popular electronic “world” music. They conduct their fieldwork as sound engineer, light designer, and stagehand at Ann Arbor local venues The Blind Pig (rock), The Ark (folk), and The B-Side (teenagers). Outside the classroom, Clay coaches weightlifting and performs as a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter. Rock on!
