Walgreen Drama Center
The Walgreen Drama Center is home to the Department of Theatre & Drama and the Department of Musical Theatre. Designed to reflect the vibrancy of the stage, the 100,000-foot structure includes a soaring glass atrium and elegant cube design, which elegantly transforms into a beacon on the North Campus Diag. In addition to the Arthur Miller Theatre and Stamps Auditorium, Walgreen is home to classroom space, rehearsal studios, faculty and administrative offices and substantial costume and scene shops.
Arthur Miller Theatre
Named after the esteemed American playwright and U-M alumnus, The Arthur Miller Theatre is a highly flexible 280-seat courtyard-style theatre which can accommodate both thrust and proscenium configurations. Located in the Charles R. Walgreen, Jr. Drama Center, the theatre is a convenient, inviting, and intimate space for drama, musical theatre, and opera performances, and is available for many other uses, including presentations, panel discussions, lectures, and more.
Stamps Auditorium
Located in the Walgreen Drama Center, the 450-seat Stamps Auditorium is an acoustically ideal location for lectures, recitals, concerts, and master classes. With a solid oak trapezoid-shaped stage with arched downstage, the theatre also includes a retractable projection screen on back wall. Stamps Auditorium Live Stream (when available).
Newman Studio
With major updates made in 2017 to the lighting, sound system, scrims, drops, curtains, floor, and storage facilities, the Newman Studio is now the ideally suited home for SMTD theatre rehearsals; acting, directing, and movement classes; and master classes with guest artists. It features retractable seating and is the headquarters for the student-run Basement Arts, which presents several productions in the studio each year.
Towsley Studio
The main rehearsal studio for musical theatre, this space, featuring mirrored walls, is also home to acting, dance, and voice classes for musical theatre majors. With retractable seating, it can also double as a theatre and is often home to master classes with renowned Broadway artists.
Studio 2
This large studio space is equipped with safety mats and mirrored walls and includes a full range of custom-crafted stage weaponry for use in the Stage Combat class. It is also used for Movement classes, which incorporate Alexander Technique, Tai Chi training, and Pilates machine work, and the studio is sometimes utilized for rehearsals and other technique classes as well.
Theatre Shops
Comprehensive production facilities include two scene shops, a paint shop, prop shop, electrics shop, sound studio, costume shop, dye room, and costume lab. Professional quality productions in theatre, musical theatre, dance, and opera are brought to visual life through the efforts of the faculty, students, and staff that work in these creative shops.

Equipped with Macintosh computer workstations, a color plotter, scanner, a variety of computer-assisted design software, and a large format photocopier, the Design Studio provides Design & Production majors and minors with the professional tools needed to learn their craft.
Acting for the Camera Studio
A professional studio in which acting students hone essential skills of screen acting, the studio features up-to-date video cameras, VCR and television equipment used for on-the-spot video recording and playback sessions in Acting for the Camera classes.
