Performing Arts EXCELerator
- Do you have a creative venture that will advance the performing arts?
- Does your dance or theater troupe want to reach a wider audience or disrupt conventional programming?
- Are you looking for an opportunity for your ensemble to tour with a new play or chamber piece?
- Maybe you’ve created software to revolutionize the publication and distribution of original scores?
- Do you have a bold idea for how to solve a pressing arts-related problem in a novel way?
The Performing Arts EXCELerator is the opportunity to take your idea to the next level. An entrepreneurial fellowship program open to all U-M students, selection into the EXCELerator provides significant funding and mentorship to those with early-stage performing arts ventures, whether working as individuals or part of larger teams.
There is no limit on team size, however we recommend 2 to 4 members, and encourage interdisciplinary projects involving two or more U-M departments. Fellows are chosen by application in the Fall term. Those selected receive mentoring and support and will have access to up to $1,000 seed money for their projects during the Winter term. Each team will also have the chance to pitch for up to $4,000 in additional seed money. Additionally, teams will be featured on the SMTD EXCEL website and will be considered for additional external engagements with EXCEL partners.
Updated 8/2024
Our funding guidelines have been impacted by COVID-19, and all school-sponsored engaged learning activities (including any activity funded by EXCEL sources, such as projects, ventures, and/or internships) are subject to both University and state regulations.
EXCELerator Partner: Midnight Oil Collective
EXCEL is partnered with Midnight Oil Collective (MOC), a “venture studio” affiliated with the Tsai Center for Innovative Thinking at Yale (Tsai CITY) that “incubates, accelerates, and invests in arts & entertainment ventures.” MOC provides workshops, coaching, and feedback throughout the EXCELerator process. EXCELerator Fellows’ final pitches were included in Yale Ventures’ Innovation Summit, Spring 2023 and 2024 and will be considered for inclusion for the 2025 Innovation Summit as well!
Eligibility and Expectations
The lead applicant of your team must be a currently enrolled U-M student at the graduate or undergraduate level. Other team members may be U-M students, though that is not required. We will consider teams with early-stage ventures that have already been formally incorporated, but that is not necessary to participate.
Students who receive EXCELerator funding for a venture are not eligible for an additional Enterprise Fund during the same academic year, including prior to the EXCELerator Letter of Intent submission.
Note: These are general guidelines and we understand that eligibility can be complex based on individual situations. For questions regarding eligibility, please schedule a coaching with a staff member to discuss your project.
During the Winter semester, accepted Fellows will be expected to:
- Attend a “Kickoff Intensive”, to be scheduled for the weekend of January 10, 2025
- This kickoff intensive is designed to help Fellows prepare to launch and/or grow the venture – introduce key lean startup tools, set the stage for each team’s personalized mentorship plan, and set the course for incubation goals
- Meet regularly with EXCEL staff throughout the term
- Engage with mentors throughout the term, in coordination with EXCEL
- Contribute the equivalent of an additional 3-credit course (10 hours/week)
- Participate in final pitch preparation workshop, and others as scheduled
- Deliver a final pitch to the funding committee (Tuesday, April 15, 2025) between 6:00-9:00 PM
*Note that EXCEL will make efforts to accommodate schedules, but selected Fellows are expected to prioritize participation in EXCELerator sessions throughout the term alongside their other curricular commitments.
