DEI Awards
To recognize and uplift the contributions of students, faculty and staff in the advancement of diversity, equity and inclusion in service, scholarship, musicianship, artistry, or advocacy, the SMTD DEI Office has implemented SMTD DEI Awards. Nominations are due March 21, 2022.
SMTD Student DEI Award: $500
One award will be presented to an undergraduate student, and one award will be presented to a graduate student.
Eligibility:
- Nominees must be full time enrolled students at SMTD – either as an SMTD major OR minor
- Students must be enrolled during the time that the award is given
Additional Considerations:
- Students who have won other awards are still eligible
- Financial standing does not impact award eligibility
- Students many only receive this recognition once
Student Nominees should demonstrate at least one of the following:
- A high level of commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in service, scholarship, musicianship, artistry, or advocacy
- Participates in, creates, and publicizes programs or events that promote DEI in the arts and beyond
- Facilitates opportunities to bring people in the School together across backgrounds and positionalities (i.e. “the occupation of a particular position in relation to others, usually with reference to issues of culture, ethnicity, or gender” – Oxford Dictionary; read more here)
- Works to create and uplift performances that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion through programming/showcasing composers and repertoire, choreography, and/or theatrical performances that highlight a wide variety of cultures, genders, or backgrounds. This criterion takes into account the integrity of DEI in the artistic and planning process, such as ensuring that the voices of those being uplifted are also represented throughout the process, particularly when the individual leading the project does not hold these identities themself.
- Displays commitment to valuing DEI within academic responsibilities and performance opportunities
Leads efforts to increase diversity and inclusion within the School or University - Serves as a mentor to other students who have a commitment to diversity and social justice
- Exhibits a commitment to the promotion and prioritization of anti-racism and serves as an advocate for or ally to the BIPOC community in the arts and beyond
- Exhibits a commitment to the promotion and prioritization of accessibility in the arts and beyond
- Exhibits a commitment to the promotion and prioritization of gender equality in the arts and beyond and serves as an advocate for or ally to the LGBTQ+ community in the arts and beyond
SUBMIT YOUR STUDENT NOMINATION
Nominations may be submitted by any member of the SMTD Community. Community members cannot submit multiple nominations for one nominee.
NOMINATIONS ARE DUE MARCH 21, 2022
SMTD Faculty DEI Award: $500
One award will be presented to a lecturer/clinical faculty member and one award will presented to a tenured/tenure-track faculty member.
Faculty Nominee Eligibility:
- All SMTD faculty members are eligible regardless of rank or position
Additional Considerations:
- Faculty can only win this award once
- Faculty who have won other awards such as the MLK spirit awards are still eligible
Faculty nominees should demonstrate at least one of the following:
- A high level of commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in service, scholarship, teaching, musicianship, artistry, or advocacy
- Participates in, creates, and publicizes programs or events that promote DEI in the arts and beyond
