knee rattle

Stearns #0007

Africa

Nubia, Africa

This iron pod Rattle comes from the Nubia region, which encompasses part of the Nile river in Northeast Africa. Rattles such as this one are shaped by bending the iron over a stone to give it a curved shape. This rattle contains six iron pellets and was originally attached to the legs of a dancer by a leather strap decorated with cowrie shells. This instrument was acquired sometime before 1898.
