The Michigan Youth Symphonic Band (MYSB) provides woodwind, brass and percussion students rigorous experience in performing intensive and demanding repertoire in a broad range of styles. Due to restrictions regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, MYSB will be moving online for the 2020-21 Season! This online format will include rehearsals with SMTD faculty and students, as well as weekly educational webinars ranging on subjects specific to band, SMTD admissions, best practices on recording yourself from home, and much more. Each semester will conclude with virtual performance of videos compiled from all MYSB participants.
Students may sign up exclusively to the webinar series if they still want access to weekly educational webinars without participating in weekly rehearsals. More information on applications is available below.
Both the online MYSB ensemble and webinar series are open to advanced high-school aged level woodwind, brass and percussion musicians.
U-M Faculty Director: Courtney Snyder, Associate Professor and Associate Director of Bands
Rehearsal Time: Sundays, 2:45 – 3:45PM webinar, 4:00 – 5:30 PM rehearsal
Rehearsal Location: Online via Zoom meeting (accessible via the MYSB course on Canvas)
Repertoire for Fall 2020
- Second Suite for Military Band in F Major – Movement IV – G. Holst
- Collective Music Composition
Students will experience collectively composing pieces of music via online collaboration and file transfer. Through this process, they will not only continue to play their instruments, but will more clearly understand the many elements that go into creating a piece of music. By the end of this unit, each student will have progressed from composing a 15-second passage to producing a two minute or longer piece of music using their own material combined with that of their fellow students.
