Let Woman Choose Her Sphere: U-M Concert Band Celebrates the Centenary of the Ratification of the 19th Amendment

Preceding the performance in hill there will be a carillon recital in Burton Tower at 6:30 p.m. and Liberty Awakes suffrage exhibit in Mezzanine Lobby. Pre-concert lecture at 7:15 p.m. in the lower lobby.

The Concert Band will perform a concert featuring compositions by women, including a premiere of a composition by Valerie Coleman, commissioned specifically for this concert to celebrate the centenary of the ratification of the 19th amendment. In addition to performances by the Concert Band, actors will recite texts by prominent suffragists and women's rights advocates over the last 250 years. Preceding the concert, attendees can can peruse the Liberty Awakes suffrage exhibit that showcases the suffrage movement here in Washtenaw County, attend a concert of carillon music by women composers in the Burton Memorial Tower, and attend a pre-concert lecture with the conductor and commissioned composer, Valerie Coleman, about the premier composition.
