Julio Cardona joins SMTD as Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Cardona has over 20 years of experience in higher education administration and has been recognized nationally for efforts to foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive campus climate via data-driven solutions. Initiatives he has led with award-winning teams have been featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, and National Public Radio.
Up until his appointment at SMTD, Cardona was the director of U-M’s Trotter Multicultural Center. He previously served as assistant dean of students within the Division of Student Life, advisor to the Central Student Government, and WCBN-FM (U-M’s student-run radio station), and as a senior research associate for the National Center for Institutional Diversity, and the School of Education. Additionally, Cardona has held leadership roles at Stanford University, University of California, Santa Cruz, and California State University, Monterey Bay.
Cardona earned his PhD in Higher Education Administration from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, a master’s degree in Education from Stanford University, and a bachelor’s degree in Human Communication from California State University, Monterey Bay.
