Feb 22, 2024 | Faculty, Faculty Announcements

The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance is excited to announce that Evan Jones will join the Department of Voice & Opera as assistant professor of music in the fall of 2024. Jones, a baritone, has established a reputation of excellence in both performing and teaching.

Jones enjoys a diverse performing career in concert, opera, and musical theatre. He has performed with the Ravinia and Tanglewood Music Festivals, Opera Memphis, Opera Naples, Berkshire Opera Company, Compañía Lírica Nacional de Costa Rica, the Rochester and Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestras, and the Memphis and Helena Symphonies. An active performer of new works, he was the soloist on the premiere recording of Randol Bass’s Passage into Spirit, and for the premiere performance and Naxos label recording of Ernő Dohnányi’s Orchesterlieder with the Florida State University Symphony Orchestra.

“I am absolutely thrilled to be joining the amazing voice and opera faculty at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance.” said Jones. “I am looking forward to the opportunity to work with such talented colleagues and students. It is my hope to contribute to the spirit of diversity, artistry, and innovation at SMTD.”

Since winning an Emerging Leader award from the National Association of Teachers of Singing as one of the nation’s most promising young teachers, Jones has developed a diverse and successful teaching career. Current and former students have won awards at competitions such as the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and they have performed in major opera houses, on national equity tours and Broadway, and in television and film.

“My colleagues and I are excited to welcome Evan Jones to the Department of Voice & Opera,” commented Scott Piper, associate professor of music, Norma L. Heyde faculty development professor, and chair of the Department of Voice & Opera. “We believe that Evan’s gifts as an artist and educator, coupled with his experience and skill set, will not only align with the formidable legacy of our department but also help further our vision and goals for the future.”

Jones joins SMTD from Florida State University, where he served for ten years on the voice faculty. He received his doctorate from the Eastman School of Music, where he was rewarded for excellence in performing and teaching by winning first place in the Friends of Eastman Opera Competition and as the first recipient of the William McIver Memorial Award in teaching.  He previously served as a district director for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
