Production Opportunities

What are your production opportunities at U-M Theatre?

The Theatre Department presents four or five fully-mounted mainstage productions each year, with casts comprised of acting majors and, occasionally, faculty actors. These plays are directed and designed by faculty, guest directors and designers.

Musical Theatre, Dance, and Opera

Theatre students also crew for the School of Music, Theatre & Dance opera, musical theatre, and dance productions, which are often designed by Design & Production majors.

Basement Arts

The student-run Basement Arts company presents 25 or 30 studio productions each year. Students produce the plays, which are designed by Design & Production majors. Performances are presented on weekends, generally in Studio One.

Other University of Michigan Productions

Theatre students also produce, direct, design and perform in plays produced by various university groups such as the Gilbert & Sullivan Society, MUSKET, the Rude Mechanicals, Ann Arbor Opera Theatre, and others.

Local Theatres

A number of our faculty and students work with the local Equity theatre, the Purple Rose, founded by actor Jeff Daniels. In addition, students often work with community and high school theatres in the area.

Michigan Shakespeare Festival

The Michigan Shakespeare Festival attracts audiences from all over the midwest for its summer season which typically runs mid-July through August. The Festival is located in Jackson, MI which is 35 miles west of Ann Arbor.
