Teaching Certification Degree Programs

Undergraduate Degrees in the Department of Music Education

Dual Degrees in Music Education and Performance

Students may also elect to pursue a dual degree in Music Education and Performance, which is a streamlined program that leads to the awarding of two separate degrees at graduation. The following combinations are available:

To apply for the Dual Degree option, please apply for both the music education degree and the performance degree within the Common Application. In the Artistic Profile for either the performance or music education degree programs, you will be prompted to indicate that you are applying for the Dual Degree option in the other field. Please contact the SMTD Office of Admissions to learn more about the application procedure for applying to Music Education and Performance.

Teaching Certification may also be added to Masters of Music degree programs.


Graduate Degree Programs

Master of Music in Music Education

Through a series of foundational courses the program interweaves research and practice, leading students to reflect on and apply knowledge and experiences from coursework to their teaching. There are three curricula offered to meet students' diverse needs:

  • Academic Year Program - coursework is designed to be completed in two terms, this program is offered in the Fall and Winter terms.
  • Summer Program - designed to be completed in three summers, this program is offered during a five-week summer session running from the last week of June through the last week of July.

How to Apply

Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education

Designed for the person who desires a career as a scholar and educator in music education at the college or university level, possibly in conjunction with teaching applied music or conducting a performing organization. The curriculum for the Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education is offered through the Rackham School of Graduate Studies.
