Performance Opportunities

There are abundant performance opportunities for dance majors throughout the year, both within the department, in the larger University, and beyond.

Within the Department of Dance

  • MFA and BFA Thesis concerts: Audition in September; concerts take place November to March; produced by Senior Dance majors and 2nd year graduate students
  • Freshman Touring Company: First year dance majors perform faculty, guest artist and student choreography in multiple locations throughout southeast Michigan (e.g., schools, senior centers, hospitals); takes place during two weeks in April
  • American College Dance Association: Audition in November; regional conference; students selected by faculty to attend and/or present; takes place in March

  • Emerging Artists Concert: Presented by any Dance undergrad or grad student who would like to present their choreography; takes place in April

Beyond the Department of Dance

There are many other performance opportunities beyond regular curricular departmental performances. Some of these are special performance projects initiated by a dance faculty member and involving dance majors, taking place in such venues as:

  • University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)
  • University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens
  • Nichols Arboretum
  • Duderstadt Center Video Studio
  • Downtown Ann Arbor

U-M dance students have frequently been invited to perform in national and international settings, for performance projects taking place in such places as Costa Rica, Japan, Italy, and New York.

There are also opportunities each year to perform with:

  • International guest artists
  • Student-run musical theater productions: Presented twice a year at Power Center by MUSKET
  • Student-run dance companies: Impact, Dance 2XS, Cornrows Dance Co, Climax Dance Co, Biorhythms, Cadence, Outrage Dance Group, and PURE Dance Xtreme
  • International dance groups: Wolverine Bhangra, Amala Dancers,Armenian, Ballroom, DESH, SPICMACAY, Indigo Dance Team, FunKtion, Latin Culture Show, Leim Irish Dance, Michigan Argentine Tango Club, MAYA Dance Team, Raas Team, RhythM Tap Ensemble, MSalsa, VariAsian, Vencedores Samba Bateria, MSalsa, MTango, etc.

U-M dancers are pro-active in pursuing a variety of opportunities to perform both within and beyond the Department, developing their own unique performance and choreography portfolio over the course of their time at U-M. Dancers often appear in, choreograph and/or edit their own screendances, produced independently on campus or as part of the winter term Screendance course, cosponsored by the Department of Dance and the Screen Arts & Cultures Program.
