Program in Music Studies

The Program in Music Studies was created to support students who wish to forge new creative identities, build multidisciplinary careers that expand upon traditional degree programs, or chart their own path. Our students are driven by a passion for music and a commitment to making a difference.

For students across the University of Michigan, we offer three minors—a Music Minor, a Minor in Popular Music Studies, and a Minor in Global Performance Studies. We encourage all students to jump in and take a music course. Do something FUN; something that will expand your creative horizons. As you develop your interests, contact an SMTD advisor to see how to shape your passions into a degree credential. We will bring your talents to light.

For students interested in deeper musical training, we offer a BA in Music at SMTD. It is the most flexible of the SMTD undergraduate degree programs, and we welcome applicants with a wide range of musical backgrounds, talents, and experiences. The BA in Music also offers an excellent platform for students interested in pursuing an additional minor or a double major, such as music and a minor in arts management, or music paired with computer science, engineering, psychology, business or any other University of Michigan degree.

Faculty

Members of the piano faculty are distinguished musicians and devoted teachers who expertly guide and encourage students to achieve their greatest potential. As active practitioners of their craft and celebrated pedagogues, they offer weekly private lessons and seminars to all their students.
