EXCEL NYC Immersion

This May, EXCEL is taking up to 25 SMTD students on a weekend visit to New York City to go behind-the-scenes of Broadway and some of the city's leading performing arts organizations.

Students can apply for one of two "tracks" -- either immersing themselves in the Broadway pit orchestra experience or exploring the inner workings of arts management organizations.

Selected students will be required to submit a $25 deposit.

Application Deadline: March 5

The Experience

  • Music performance track students will see a Broadway production Saturday night, sit in on the Broadway pit orchestra performance for the Sunday matinee show, meet with freelance professionals who are actively playing on Broadway on Monday, and explore samplings of the city's cultural offerings throughout the weekend.
  • Arts management track students will also see the Broadway show and will make several site visits to leading arts organizations We'll tour Carnegie Hall and connect with members of their education team, then visit Brooklyn-based National Sawdust to speak with their Executive Director and other team members about how their organization functions.


  • Current SMTD Students are eligible to apply, including those who will graduate in April.
  • Applicants for the Performance track must be an instrumental musician with serious interest in exploring the opportunities of freelancing on Broadway. We will consider all SMTD students who show serious interest and relevant experience in instrumental performance on Broadway.
  • Applicants for the Arts management track must demonstrate serious interest about arts administration and/or management opportunities in New York City.

Application Materials

  • One-page resume, focusing on your relevant experience
  • Letter of recommendation from a faculty mentor
  • 500 word letter of intent, addressing your interest in the trip and why you would like to attend. Please also include the following: What are your long-term career goals, and how does this trip fit into them? What skills or experiences do you hope to gain from this experience? What are you most excited to learn about on this trip?

The School of Music, Theatre & Dance EXCEL Lab provides entrepreneurship training and career services for all U-M students engaged in the performing arts. Our goal is to enable all our students to forge a viable career in the performing arts by exploring, developing and leveraging their talents, training, skills, and ambitions.

Excellence in Entrepreneurship, Career Empowerment & Leadership (EXCEL) catalyzes success for U-M SMTD students and alumni through co-curricular workshops, ongoing mentoring, and $100,000 in student project and venture funding.

Core Competencies

With initial funding support from the Transforming Learning for a Third-Century Initiative, EXCEL offers flexible, non-invasive programming informed by SMTD stakeholders. Through it's diverse array of activities, the EXCEL Lab leverages the full extent of the University of Michigan ecosystem (students, faculty, staff, alumni, and partners).
