Musicianship Course

Key Information

Level 1 Meeting Time: Sundays, 11:00 AM - 11:50 AM

Level 2 Meeting Time: Sundays, 12:00 PM - 12:50 PM

Class Location: E.V. Moore Building Room 2038


This course is open to all interested high school students, as well as Michigan Youth Ensemble participants. It is designed to provide an introductory exploration into music theory, analysis and aural skills to prepare students for a college theory placement exam.

An assessment is taken at the start of the term. This is used as an integral part of the course design, and is used by the Instructor to cater the curriculum to that years cohort.

Topics will include:

  • Scales, key signatures, clefs, and basic theory
  • Basics of counterpoint and harmony
  • Analysis of phrases and simple forms
  • Sight-singing
  • Dictation/transcription
