Small Ensembles & Courses

YETE - Youth Euphonium and Tuba Ensemble, Fritz A. Kaenzig, Faculty Advisor

The Youth Euphonium and Tuba Ensemble (YETE) was started in 2011 and is composed of middle school and high school euphonium and tuba players from the greater Southeast Michigan area. YETE students work with current U-M graduate and undergraduate tuba and euphonium students of Prof. Fritz Kaenzig to strengthen their overall musicianship, learn new repertoire, and participate in collaborative music making with a diverse group of students from across Michigan culminating each semester in a joint concert shared with the University of Michigan Euphonium and Tuba Ensemble.

Musicianship Course, Christopher Sherwood-Gabrielson, Instructor

This course is open to all interested high school students, as well as Michigan Youth Ensemble participants. It is designed to provide an introductory exploration into music theory, analysis and aural skills to prepare students for a college theory placement exam.

Topics will include:

  • Scales, key signatures, clefs, and basic theory
  • Basics of counterpoint and harmony
  • Analysis of phrases and simple forms
  • Sight-singing
  • Dictation/transcription
