Small Ensembles & Courses

YETE - Youth Euphonium and Tuba Ensemble, Fritz A. Kaenzig, Faculty Advisor

The Youth Euphonium and Tuba Ensemble (YETE) was started in 2011 and is composed of junior high and high school euphonium and tuba players from the greater Southeast Michigan area. YETE students work with current U-M graduate and undergraduate tuba and euphonium students to strengthen their overall musicianship, learn new repertoire, and participate in collaborative music making with a diverse group of students from across Michigan.

Jazz Improvisation
An ensemble designed to develop the skills and understanding necessary to perform in the jazz idiom. Students develop both listening and playing skills through the analysis and performance of standard songs and artists.

iMpact! Percussion Ensemble, Jonathan Ovalle, Faculty Advisor

iMpact! Percussion Ensemble is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for high-school percussionists to rehearse and perform exciting percussion ensemble repertoire as well as receive weekly coaching. Students will engage in a variety of works from keyboard ensembles, to mixed percussion ensembles, to smaller, non-conducted chamber works culminating each semester in a joint concert shared with the University of Michigan Percussion Ensemble.

Musicianship Course, Christopher Sherwood-Gabrielson, Instructor

These intensive course in music theory, analysis and aural skills are open to all interested students as well as Michigan Youth Ensemble participants.

Topics will include:

  • Scales, key signatures, clefs, and basic theory
  • Basics of counterpoint and harmony
  • Analysis of phrases and simple forms
  • Sight-singing
  • Dictation/transcription
