About the Department of Musical Theatre

The Department of Musical Theatre at the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre & Dance is ranked at the very top of educational arts training programs, with countless graduates performing in the casts of Broadway and national touring shows, as well as in television and film. In addition, numerous alums are working throughout the industry as casting directors, agents, producers, directors, choreographers, writers, composers and educators. It would be difficult to overstate the enormous impact Michigan has had on the professional theatre world.

The Department’s achievements are truly remarkable. In 2017 alone, alums won Tony, Grammy, and Academy Awards. In 2018, graduates received nominations for Tony, Emmy, and Academy Awards and won a Grammy Award. Graduates have appeared recently in such Broadway shows as The Book of Mormon, Dear Evan Hansen, The Band’s Visit, Mean Girls, Hamilton, Aladdin, Waitress, Carousel (revival), My Fair Lady (revival), The Donna Summer Musical, Sunday in the Park with George (revival), The Great Comet, A Bronx Tale, and Frozen.

Rising to prominence over the last 30 years, the Musical Theatre degree was one of just a handful of BFA degrees in the 1980’s focused on training artists for Broadway stages. Today, even though over 150 such programs have emerged at colleges and universities, Michigan remains at the forefront because of the way it continues to develop innovative methods in student education, attracting outstanding applicants, faculty and guest artists.

The BFA Musical Theatre program is not only the most competitive degree in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, but also in the entire University of Michigan. Over 1300 students applied for the musical theatre class of 2022, with only 2% admitted, yielding 22 new students. The acceptance rate University-wide at Michigan is under 24%.
