The University Opera Theatre showcases two new works–each around 30 minutes in length–in a stripped down performance on the University of Michigan’s North Campus.

The first opera, ALL WOUNDS BLEED, is a re-telling of the myth of Echo & Narcissus in three scenes and an epilogue, composed by Pulitzer Prize finalist Christopher Cerrone with libretto by Tony Asaro. It features three vocalists–a soprano, a mezzo, and a tenor–as nymph Echo, goddess Hera, and self-adoring Narcissus respectively.

ALL WOUNDS BLEED was originally commissioned as part of The Composer Librettist Development Program at American Lyric Theater. It premiered on March 23, 2013 at the Philbrook Museum, performed by the Tulsa Opera under the direction of Kostis Protopapas. It received its orchestrated premiere on May 17, 2019, performed by the Chicago Fringe Opera and Latitude 49 and directed by Susan Payne O’Brien and music director Catherine O’Shaughnessy.

The second opera, DAUGHTERS OF THE BLOODY DUKE, is a dark comedic one-act opera written by Jake Runestad, in which Margot, the young daughter of the Bloody Duke of Ravenswood, must choose between love and the demands of her revenge-crazed family.

DAUGHTERS OF THE BLOODY DUKE was commissioned by Washington National Opera as a part of the American Opera Initiative. It premiered on November 21, 2014 at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.

This performance was filmed live with piano accompaniment in the McIntosh Theatre on October 9, with all performers adhering to University of Michigan COVID-19 safety guidelines–including masks for the vocalists. The Opera One-Acts will premiere on the SMTD YouTube channel on Wednesday, December 9 at 8:00 PM, where it will be available for a one-week run. Both operas will be sung in English.
