Oriol Sans

Oriol Sans joined the conducting faculty at the University of Michigan as assistant professor of Music in the Department of Conducting in 2015. His responsibilities include music director of the University Philharmonia Orchestra, director of the Contemporary Directions Ensemble, and teaching conducting.

A native of Catalonia, Spain, Sans studied orchestral and choral conducting at the Barcelona Conservatory, receiving the school's Honors Award in both specialties upon graduation. Following his training in Spain, Sans brought his studies to the United States with maestro Kenneth Kiesler at U-M, where he received his masters degree in orchestral conducting and his doctorate in musical arts.

Sans was the recipient of the Dorothy Greenwald Scholarship for promising instrumentalists, conductors, and composers as well as a scholarship granted by the Agustí Pedro i Pons Foundation for upper level musical studies. He also attended workshops led by renowned conductors in Spain, Austria, Germany, England, France, Canada, and the United States. In addition to his degrees in music, Sans also holds a bachelor's degree in humanities from the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, and completed graduate coursework in musicology at the Barcelona Universitat Autònoma.

Sans' engagements as a guest conductor include the Detroit Symphony, the Santa Fe Symphony, the New Mexico Philharmonic, the San Juan Symphony in Durango (Colorado), the Orquesta Filarmónica de Jalisco in Guadalajara (Mexico), and the Festival des orchestres de jeunes du QuébecSans has been an assistant conductor to maestros Leonard Slatkin, Hans Graf, Kenneth Kiesler, John Nelson, Jerry Blackstone, Martin Katz, Andrew Grams, Jeffrey Kahane, and JoAnn Falletta with several orchestras and projects, including the Gulbenkian Orchestra, the Ensemble Orchestral de Parisand the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

As music director of several choirs and orchestras in Catalonia, Sans led as a faculty member at the Mollerussa School of Music, the Lleida Conservatory, and the Lleida University. He also held the position of music director of the U-M Life Sciences Orchestra. In addition to his engagements as a conductor, Sans was the artistic director of the webcasts at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra from 2011 until 2015.
