Joe Becker

LEO Intermittent Lecturer

Joseph Becker has been principal percussionist of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) since 2012.  Prior to coming to Detroit, he was a member of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra.  Becker received his Bachelor's degree at the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Frank Epstein and Will Hudgins, percussionists of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.  He later received his Master's degree at Boston University under the tutelage of Tim Genis, principal timpanist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Becker was a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center from 2008 to 2009 and has performed with such ensembles as the Kansas City Symphony, the Charleston Symphony, New Music Detroit, and the Callithumpian Consort.  Aside from his recordings with the DSO, he can be heard on Naxos Records and Tzadik Records performing the music of Gunther Schuller, John Zorn, and Fred Frith.
