Emily Smokovich

Executive Assistant to the Assistant Dean for Admissions

Originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Emily Smokovich, mezzo-soprano, earned her BM and MM in voice performance at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University studying with Andreas Poulimenos, and in May 2017 completed her DMA in voice performance at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, studying with Freda Herseth.

Role highlights include the collegiate premiere as Margaret Johnsons in The Light in the Piazza and Annina in Der Rosenkavalier. Dr. Smokovich has worked with renowned conductors, directors, and coaches, such as David Effron, Kathleen Kelly, Dan Riddle, Michael Ehrmann, Carol Vaness, Virginia Zeani, and Sylvia McNair.

Smokovich brings a wealth of experience to her role in Admissions, having worked previously as an administrative assistant and as a house manager and supertitle operator. Additionally, she has lived what many SMTD prospects and applicants are seeking, and she is passionate about sharing her love of the arts, her experience, and her commitment to helping students.

She is also an accomplished pedagogue, currently teaching voice and directing at Madonna University. She served U-M last year as the interim instructor of voice in the Department of Musical Theatre.

Working in the SMTD Admissions Office at the U-M allows her to not only continue to support a university she loves and work with a faculty and staff she admires, but to facilitate and support future performers as they achieve their dreams.
