Benny Green

Assistant Professor of Jazz & Contemporary Improvisation
Office: 2003 Moore

Benny Green was appointed as assistant professor in the Department of Jazz & Contemporary Improvisation for the School of Music, Theatre & Dance in September 2014.

Green began his classical piano studies at the age of seven, influenced by his father who was a tenor saxophonist. His prodigious talent and love for music propelled him to learn from and work with the upper stratum of jazz luminaries such as Betty Carter, Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard, and Ray Brown. Green's recordings with these masters helped to form a foundation of jazz education.

Green is a luminary in the field of jazz and contemporary improvisation. As a dedicated teacher, he has taught at summer camps and been a guest artist at many institutions including Berkeley College of Music, Juilliard, North Texas State, the Brubeck Institute, Snow College, Stanford University, and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. He represents a vitally important tradition in jazz, that of the artist who has learned his craft directly from the masters.

Some notable highlights from Green's 20 year career as a leading jazz pianist include touring with Betty Carter for four years, and in 1993 Oscar Peterson chose Benny as the first recipient of the of the city of Toronto's Glen Gould International Protégé Prize in Music culminating in Oscar & Benny (1998) recorded for Telarc. He has appeared on over 100 recordings, with legacy artists such as Betty Carter, Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Watson, Milt Jackson, Diana Krall, and as a featured artist in Ray Brown's trio series of CDs for Telarc.

For his newest release, Magic Beans, in February 2013, Green created 10 original compositions performed by his trio.
