Every year, SMTD offers a vast array of performances in every discipline. Over 900 student performances take place during the academic year in our celebrated concert halls and theatres, and in our intimate recital halls. Each performance features artists at the beginning of their careers, before they go on to be recognized at the national level in their field. SMTD performances do far more than just provide curricular opportunities to students. They provide invaluable cultural enrichment to the community.
All revenue generated from ticket sales goes toward creating further educational performance opportunities for SMTD students.

Calendar of Events
The vast majority of the performances presented by SMTD are free and open to the public. This includes instrumental ensembles that range from small chamber groups to 90-piece orchestras and bands, and choirs of many configurations and sizes. Whether you prefer early, classical, or contemporary music, or your passion is for jazz, electronic, or world music, SMTD offers an ensemble—or in many cases, multiple ensembles—to suit your interests.
2023-24 Performance Calendar Available Now
Ticketed Performances
A small number of performances produced by SMTD are ticketed, including multiple large-scale, major ensemble concerts in the renowned Hill Auditorium, as well as 10 fully-staged productions and two studio productions featuring our theatre & drama, musical theatre, dance, and opera students. These ticketed productions are on par with professional productions, and often feature guest directors and designers who are currently working as performing arts professionals.
Performance Opportunities for Students
A wide variety of performance opportunities are available for SMTD students, depending on your major. Whether your focus is on early, classical, or contemporary music or your passion is for jazz, electronic, or world music, there is an ensemble—or in many cases, multiple ensembles—available for you, including specific opportunities for percussion, piano, and organ & carillon. In theatre & drama, musical theatre, dance, and opera, opportunities abound in both professionally- produced and student-run presentations.
All ensembles at the University of Michigan are open to any Michigan student; most require previous experience and an audition. Some ensembles are designated for non-music students, and are less competitive and time-consuming than those intended for SMTD students.
Venues
The University is home to a wealth of beloved performance spaces, along with many others within our main buildings—as well as two carillons—providing performers and audiences alike with a variety of venues for performances of every iteration. Here are a few highlights.
Walgreen Drama Center
The sleek and modern home for musical theatre and theatre & drama students features 100,000 square feet of space and includes the Arthur Miller Theatre, Stamps Auditorium, state-of-the-art classrooms, and studios for design, sound, screen acting, and performance, as well as extensive theatre shops.
The Earl V. Moore Building
The Earl V. Moore Building is the home to music at Michigan. Built in 1964, with significant additions in 1985 and 2015, the Moore Building houses the School’s musical performance, education, and scholarship departments as well as administrative offices. Performance venues within the Moore Building include the Britton Recital Hall and the McIntosh Theatre.
Hill Auditorium
Renowned for its magnificent acoustics, Hill Auditorium is one of the world’s great concert halls. Since opening in 1913, Hill has welcomed ensembles, orchestras and speakers from around the world. Hill seats 3,500 and is the largest performance space on campus.
Power Center for the Performing Arts
This 1,300-seat theatre is primarily used for our dance, musical theatre, theatre, and large-scale opera performances.
Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre
In this 600-seat theatre, many of our smaller, more intimate theatre, musical theatre, dance, and opera productions are held.
