BFA in Design & Production: Requirements

For those who wish to work in design, production, or stage management for theatre.

Pre-college preparation: Significant involvement in theatre productions is recommended. Talented students without previous experience may apply.

Degree requirements:

Design & Production fundamentals (Total credits - 50): 101, 240, 241, 245, 250, 256, 260, 263, 270, 277, 321, 322, 323  OR  325, 403, 404

Design & Production specialization (Total credits - 17): 162, 345, 350, 353, 356, 360, 370, 385, 386, 400, 401, 435, 438, 445, 446, 450, 452, 456, 457, 460, 462, 464, 468, 470, 471, 472, 476, 478, 556, 557, 560, 564, 570, 571

Theatre Production Practicum (Total Credits - 8):  251, 252, 261, 262, 351, 352, 451, 461, 495

Non-School of Music, Theatre & Dance Requirements (Total Credits - 43):

English 124, 125 (4 hrs), English 367 or equivalent (4 hrs), English upper-level writing (3 hrs), Art History classes (8 hrs), Foreign language or tested proficiency (8hrs), Natural, Physical and/or Social Science (8 hrs), Cognate courses (8 hrs) - cognate courses relate to the student’s field of specialization; these could include courses in architecture, art, art history, computer science, film & video, engineering, language, mathematics, or psychology.

Non-School of Music, Theatre & Dance Electives (Total Credits: 6)

Total credits required: 124

Grades: A grade lower than a "C minus" in any School of Music, Theatre & Dance design or production class is NOT acceptable and will not fulfill degree requirements.

Portfolio Review: All Design & Production majors must participate in a portfolio review and showing in the winter term of their sophomore, junior, and senior years. This review measures the overall progress of the student in productions and course work, and serves as a prerequisite for upper-level theatre and drama courses. It is also an effective means of preparing the student to enter the job market or graduate school.
