Blue on Broadway Halftime Show

Two of the University of Michigan's most well-known musical entities-the Michigan Marching Band (MMB) and the Department of Musical Theatre at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance (SMTD) -will partner at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, September 24 in a history-making presentation.

Performing a half-time show for a live audience of 109,000 at the Michigan-Penn State football game, the MMB and musical theatre students, along with SMTD percussion students, will perform "Blue on Broadway," featuring a montage of classics from Broadway musicals. The MMB believes this to be the first collaboration of its kind in the history of the NCAA for a halftime show.

"'Blue on Broadway' exemplifies and epitomizes the true spirit of the University of Michigan through cross-curricular artistic, academic, and athletic collaboration in the largest live performance venue in the western hemisphere," said Professor John Pasquale, director of the MMB and SMTD's associate director of bands.

"Blue on Broadway" will include beloved musical theatre numbers such as "76 Trombones" from The Music Man; "All That Jazz" from Chicago; "Under the Sea" from The Little Mermaid (featuring a SMTD steel drum band); and the incredibly popular "Let It Go" from the Disney film Frozen. Students and faculty returned to campus a week early to participate in this presentation.

The SMTD Department of Musical Theatre is the most competitive department for admission at the University of Michigan, with only 22 freshman selected annually from over 1100 applicants. Graduates of the program enjoy successful careers in theatre, television, and film, including Tony nominees and winners, and are known for their talent, professionalism, and knowledge of the genre.
